For UPS the London 2012 Games Is Years in the Making
As early as 2009, a team of skilled UPS logistics professionals began working closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to start the planning process for 2012. An extensive array of technology systems have been prepared within UPS warehouse and distribution facilities for maintaining precise control of the millions of athletic and related items that will be stored and processed before, during, and after the Games.Key to the logistical success of the Games will be UPS's management of the UPS London 2012 Logistics Centre – a network of warehouse and distribution facilities totalling over 800,000 square feet, including a 300,000 square foot warehouse in Stevenage and a 550,000 square foot sister warehouse in Tilbury. Collectively, these facilities will house approximately 66,000 warehouse pallet positions. Over 120 dedicated drivers and more than 1,000 employees are being assigned to support the Games by 2012.
Cindy Miller, managing director for UPS UK, Ireland and the Nordics, said, "Preparing for the London 2012 Games is one of the most substantial and complex logistical projects in the world. This presents a very exciting challenge for us. We are committing the full complement of our capabilities, both locally and globally, to help ensure the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are delivered without a hitch."
For the UPS Logistics Team, the partnership with Team GB at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada, served as a testing ground leading up to the challenging task of handling virtually all of the logistics at the upcoming London 2012 Games. In Vancouver, UPS not only successfully moved Team GB to and from the 2010 Winter Games but also had a chance to meet with the Vancouver Organising Committee (VANOC) in preparation for the 2012 Games.
To further celebrate our role as the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter and Tier 2 domestic sponsor of the London 2012 Games, all 3,600 vehicles and 2,800 driver uniforms in the UK proudly display the official UPS/London 2012 composite logo.
Alan Williams, Director, London 2012 Sponsorship and Operations, UPS UK and Ireland, said: "With our drivers and vehicles travelling across the length and breadth of the UK, we are now one of the most visible supporters of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
