16,000 Beds And No Time To Rest - Olympic Village Logistics In The Spotlight

The scale of the London 2012 logistical operation has been outlined today by the UPS London 2012 team responsible for storing, constructing and delivering all the furniture into the Olympic Village.

A dedicated team of 80 employees at UPS's London 2012 warehouse facility in Tilbury are constructing all of the beds, bedside cabinets and wardrobes which will occupy the 2,818 apartments in which the athletes will stay, as well as the soft furnishings, sofas and coffee tables that will adorn the shared apartments.

Items being handled and delivered by UPS to the Olympic Village include 16,000 beds, 21,000 pillows and duvets, 11,000 sofas, 9,000 wardrobes, and more than 5,636 bean bags.

The Village will be able to house up to 16,000 athletes and team officials during the Olympic Games and 6,200 athletes and team officials plus 1000 referees and umpires during the Paralympic Games, all from 200 countries around the world.

"Imagine furnishing a town of 16,000 people - that's exactly what we do here at Tilbury", said Derek Irving, London 2012 Operations Manager, "Tilbury is one of two facilities which we are operating, dedicated solely to London 2012 logistics. It's an incredibly complex operation, but we are confident that we will deliver everything without a hitch."

Deliveries from UPS's London 2012 warehouse facility to the Olympic Village are carried out via the use of demountable trailers. This is part of UPS's commitment to delivering the most sustainable Games yet as each single tractor is able to pull up to two trailers, providing efficient transportation and which helps lower the carbon footprint.

UPS London 2012 Ambassador and British gymnast Louis Smith took a sneak peek behind the scenes at UPS's Tilbury facility, getting an exclusive first look at the furniture which will kit out the athletes' apartments during the London 2012 Games.

As a British Olympic bronze medallist, Louis spoke to employees at the site about his goals for the London 2012 Games and explained what it felt like to stay inside the Olympic Village in Beijing. He also took the opportunity to pick out some of the items he hopes to be using during Games time as a member of Team GB.

Trying out a London 2012 bed for the first time, Louis Smith said: "It's amazing to see how big the UPS operation is to support the Games. Just sitting here, imagining what it will be like when I'm in my room for real - it' really exciting but daunting to think that the London 2012 Games are just around the corner. All it takes is some furniture and some high-vis jackets and it makes that reality hit home!"

As the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, UPS is responsible for virtually all the distribution and logistics services required to produce the London Olympics. By Games time, it is estimated that UPS will have handled 30 million items, including 1 million pieces of sporting equipment.

UPS ExCels in Biggest London 2012 Logistics Test Yet

UPS Takes On Logistics Challenge of 7 Olympic Sports in 18 Days at ExCel London

UPS today completed the first phase of competition logistics for the London Prepares series of test events at ExCel London carried out by the Organising Committee of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will feature seven different Olympic sporting disciplines.

As the first round of live competition starting tomorrow, with the Boxing and Table Tennis events, UPS's logistical role will continue across 18 days of sporting action, as events including Fencing, Judo and Weightlifting take place in preparation for the London 2012 Games.

Just as the athletes involved will be using the London Prepares series as a stepping stone to their goal of competing in the London 2012 Games, so UPS has been using each event as a test case for how logistical operations will be delivered next summer to all venues.

With 19 test events already completed during the summer, UPS has taken on its biggest challenge to date at ExCeL London, managing the complex task of ensuring equipment associated with multiple sports are delivered, installed and removed to a tight schedule within a single venue.

In time for the first London Prepares event tomorrow, UPS has delivered into ExCeL London items including 9,000 pieces of furniture, 7,870 square metres of sports arena flooring, 3 truckloads of timing and scoring equipment, 2 truckloads of technology equipment, and 1 boxing ring.

Over the next 18 days, UPS will continue to deliver and install equipment for the seven sporting events taking place, including over 5 truckloads of safety mats for the Wrestling, Judo and Taekwondo competitions and over 7,400kg of weights for the Weightlifting competition.

As the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, UPS is using the London Prepares series to demonstrate its capabilities in executing complex logistics in live environments similar to those which will be in operation during the London 2012 Games.

"ExCeL London has been our biggest test yet, simply because of the number of different sports taking place over a period of just a few days," said Cindy Miller, Managing Director, UPS UK, Ireland & Nordics. "Ordinarily, these are sports which wouldn't be staged together, so there has been a lot of unique planning that has gone into ensuring everything is delivered and in place for each upcoming event, while at the same time removing all the equipment used from previous events. It's a huge challenge, but one that has been a thrill for our team to work on because they know this is all about getting ready for the big stage of the London 2012 Games."

UPS is responsible for virtually all logistics services for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games via an integrated supply chain solution that includes venue logistics services, warehousing services and a distribution network that will collect and deliver everything from documents to heavy freight. UPS also will be responsible for all customs clearance, freight forwarding and courier services before, during and after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

UPS launches London 2012 Olympic advertising campaign

UPS's advertising highlights the little things behind delivering the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

UPS today launched its first advertising campaign to activate its role in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with content appearing in television and digital media outlets as preparations for the London 2012 Games continue to ramp up.

With the London 2012 Games as the central campaign theme, UPS extends the principles of the "We ? Logistics" advertisements launched in Q3 2010. The campaign demonstrates how UPS is ensuring the London 2012 Games will be an unparalleled success by delivering flawless logistics support, which includes handling more than 30 million items for 46 sporting events. The campaign also will include radio spots and print ads in the coming weeks.

The campaign launch coincides with a renewed microsite and the launch of a UPS UK Facebook page that further define the details behind delivering a successful Olympic Games. UPS's London 2012 Ambassadors Ben Ainslie, Louis Smith, Denise Lewis and Steve Rider have contributed through blogs, radio ads and other content in order to enrich the logistics story behind every athlete.

"Our London 2012 advertising is part of an integrated marketing campaign aimed at highlighting the important role logistics plays in business success today - all showcased through the most exciting of world sporting events - the Olympic Games. Our integrated role in the games allows us to tell a story that encompasses every level of logistics support we offer to our customers," said Nick Basford, vice president of marketing for UPS Europe.

UPS enlisted advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather to create the campaign. Ogilvy & Mather developed the "That's Logistics" jingle, which is a reworking of the classic hit song "That's Amore" and includes lyrics about the many processes and parts UPS will coordinate to set the stage for a successful London 2012 Games.

The advertising launch comes on the heels of successful logistics management of the first set of 'London Prepares' test events which concluded at the Olympic Park with BMX and basketball competitions last month. During this time UPS was able to test the most critical elements of logistics management from initial venue deliveries and installation, to transitions between different sporting events, to final venue breakdown. The conclusion also was marked by the 250,000th item handled by UPS for the London 2012 Games, a number set to increase dramatically in the coming ten months running up to the Opening Ceremony.

As the official logistics provider of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, UPS is responsible for virtually all the distribution and logistics services via an integrated supply chain network that includes venue logistics services, warehousing services and a distribution infrastructure that will collect and deliver everything from documents to heavy freight. UPS also will be responsible for all customs clearance, freight forwarding and courier services before, during and after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Louis Smith Joins UPS Team As London Olympic Items Reach Quarter Million Count

British Olympic Hopeful Louis Smith Becomes Latest UPS London 2012 Ambassador

UPS today confirmed British gymnast Louis Smith as its fourth London 2012 Olympic Games Ambassador as the company passed another logistics milestone in preparation for the London 2012 Games.

Louis, who joins existing UPS London 2012 Olympic Ambassadors Ben Ainslie, Denise Lewis and Steve Rider, visited UPS's 2012 Logistics Centre in Tilbury to watch the 250,000th Olympic item being handled by the UPS operational team following the completion of first-round testing.

Last week, UPS successfully managed the logistics for two test events at the BMX track and basketball arena, both situated at the Olympic Park, which concluded an intense schedule of eight 'London Prepares' events over 15 days.

This followed similar operational testing at other key London 2012 venues this summer, including Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon events at Greenwich Park, the Sailing Regatta at Weymouth and Portland and Mountain Biking at Hadleigh Farm in Essex.

The events, organised as the first cluster of LOCOG's 'London Prepares' series, enabled UPS to test and observe the most crucial logistical processes that will operate at every stage of competition during the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games - from initial venue delivery and installation, to transition between different sports and events through to final venue breakdown.

Louis Smith, British Olympic Bronze medallist, praised UPS's behind-the-scenes preparations. "It has been a fantastic experience to visit UPS's London 2012 Logistics Centre and see the hard work that has taken place over the last couple of months, testing the logistics set-up that will make each sport possible come competition time. It's great to see that it is not just athletes like myself who have spent the summer busily preparing for London 2012!"

As the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the live test events have allowed UPS to demonstrate its capabilities, executing complex logistics for LOCOG to very tight deadlines.

At Greenwich Park, for example, UPS managed the transition of the venue from equestrian to pentathlon competitions within a 48-hour timeframe, moving more than 5,000 pieces of sports equipment and almost 1,000 pieces of technical equipment through a single access point.

"Testing logistics at live events such as these has been invaluable, because it's the first time during our preparations for the London 2012 Games that we've been able to operate in an environment alongside athletes and organisers. They need the freedom to focus exclusively on the competition, without worrying about where their equipment is," said Alan Williams, Director, London 2012 Sponsorship & Operations. "It has been an intense period for the team, but also a rewarding one as we've seen first-hand the value of our rigorous planning. We now are looking forward to tackling the next cluster of London 2012 test events and the logistical challenges they pose."

UPS is responsible for virtually all the distribution and logistics services for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games via an integrated supply chain solution that includes venue logistics services, warehousing services and a distribution network that will collect and deliver everything from documents to heavy freight. UPS also will be responsible for all customs clearance, freight forwarding and courier services before, during and after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. UPS Opens Logistics Center for 2012 Olympic Games

Ben Ainslie, Denise Lewis and Steve Rider Team Up to Unveil Facility in Stevenage

UPS (NYSE: UPS) today officially opened its 2012 Olympic Games logistics centre in Stevenage, England, with help from its new London 2012 Olympic Games Ambassadors Ben Ainslie, Denise Lewis and Steve Rider.

The opening represents an important milestone in the buildup to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and comes in the same week that an International Olympic Committee inspection team visits the UK to review progress with the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

As the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, UPS has an active and instrumental role in assisting LOCOG's preparations. UPS will be responsible for delivering 30 million items, including 1 million pieces of sporting equipment. The fully operational Stevenage facility will be a vital asset on this journey.

The warehouse and distribution facility, which covers a total area of 331,000 square feet, will house a vast array of sporting goods and event equipment before they are transported to the respective London 2012 Games host venues, including the Olympic Stadium, the Velodrome and other venues outside the capital such as Weymouth and Portland. In addition, a second UPS facility in Tilbury will be opening in the next couple of months.

To coincide with the Stevenage facility opening, UPS launched its London 2012 Olympic Games Ambassador program featuring Ben Ainslie, Denise Lewis and Steve Rider. All three ambassadors will be helping to spread the message of UPS's preparations ahead of the London 2012 Games, taking part in voluntary community activities and building excitement among UPS's 7,500 employees in the UK.

Ben Ainslie, triple Olympic gold medallist and London 2012 sailing hopeful, praised the hard work being done to ensure every item of Games equipment is delivered on time to the right venue: "With an event like sailing, there is so much equipment that needs to be transported to off-site venues like The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy - from the boats, to the sails to even something as small as a bracket - so the planning that goes into making sure everything is ready and accounted for by competition time is quite incredible. Knowing this planning is in good hands allows me to focus on giving my best performance."

Denise Lewis, former heptathlete and Olympic gold medallist, also paid tribute to the logistical task in hand: "It takes a huge amount of time and dedication for any athlete to achieve their dream of competing in the Olympic Games. But what is sometimes forgotten is the dedication of those behind the scenes, like UPS, who ensure all the organization is taken care of before a starting gun is even fired."

Alan Williams, Director, London 2012 Sponsorship & Operations, described the scale of the operation at Stevenage: "Between now and the opening ceremony on July 27th 2012, UPS's Stevenage facility will store millions of items of inventory that are required to make the Games run smoothly. With so many time-sensitive items needing to be transported in and out of the venues in a short time period, a vast amount of expertise is required to ensure the process is efficient and effective from start to finish."

Steve Rider, British television sports presenter, said: "When you see a facility of this size you begin to realise the scale of what is involved to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to life. It is not just the athletes' equipment that needs to be delivered; there are all the other details that UPS and LOCOG have to organise, such as making sure all the broadcast technology is in place for the world's visiting media."

UPS Expands UK Green Fleet Ahead of London 2012 Games

UPS More Than Trebles Number of Electric Vehicles Deployed In London; Fleet To Serve Key London 2012 Games Venues

UPS today announced the deployment of 14 purpose-built, electric vehicles, increasing the size of its UK green fleet to 20.

Operating out of UPS's Camden and Barking facilities, the all-electric vehicles will form a key part of the UPS fleet that will serve many of the host venues before, during and after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The new vehicles already sport the London 2012 logo which can be seen on UPS's entire 3,600-strong UK fleet.

Twelve join UPS's existing fleet of electric vehicles, which have been operating out of the Camden facility since 2009, while the remaining two vehicles extend the reach of the green fleet, becoming the first to operate out of UPS's facility in Barking.

"With the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games only eighteen months away, we are very focused on reducing the carbon footprint of our delivery network in the capital. Over the past few years, we have invested in technological improvements allowing us to expand our electric fleet, such as installing extra charging units at our London facilities," commented Cindy Miller, Managing Director UPS UK, Ireland & Nordics. "This is an important step in our continued commitment to making our operations more sustainable."

Developed by British manufacturer Modec, this electric vehicle is one of the first of its kind to effectively harness the power of modern, high energy batteries in order to meet the medium range, high performance requirements of hard working, urban delivery vehicles. Each vehicle can undertake around 60 miles on a 6 hour charge.

Globally, UPS has been utilising alternative fuel vehicles for more than 70 years. Most recently, the company announced the purchase of 130 next generation hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) in September 2010, adding to its growing alternative-fuel vehicle fleet in the US.

UPS already operates one of the largest private alternative-fuel fleets in the package delivery industry - 1,949 in total. The fleet is deployed in eight countries besides the U.S. and has travelled more than 185 million miles since 2000.

UPS Helps Team GB Go for Gold in Vancouver

As the eyes of the world turn to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, UPS, the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) are putting the finishing touches to a logistics project that has spanned several continents and taken months of planning.

As part of its role as the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, UPS is providing all freight and logistics services for Team GB's kit and equipment, including ocean freight, air freight and ground transportation at the Olympic Village in Vancouver.

The Team GB logistical journey began in the UK in December 2009 with UPS shipping over 4 tons (8,800 lbs) of items in a 6m (20ft) ocean freight container to Vancouver. Air freight operations started in January 2010 with the transportation of four bobsleighs to the training camps in Salt Lake City and Lake Placid. At the same time, skis were air lifted from Germany to Vancouver and opening ceremony parade outfits were flown in from China.

Back in the UK, UPS helped Adidas to distribute the official kit to Team GB athletes, while in Canada; UPS will provide key support to Team GB within two Olympic Village sites by not only storing and delivering in excess of 500 items, but also by assembling items of furniture for the Village.

UPS, as an Official Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has responsibility for virtually all the distribution and logistics services for the London 2012 Games, as well as providing support for the BOA in the lead up to 2012.

With 1,000 days to go until the start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, UPS has already begun the huge logistical task of activating its role as Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In the coming three months, UPS will apply London 2012 branding to more than 3,600 vehicles and 2,800 uniforms across its entire UK operations.

UPS will also be responsible for all customs clearance, freight forwarding and courier services before, during and after the London 2012 Games.

Key to the logistical success of the Games will be UPS's management of the London 2012 Games Logistics and Command Centre, a network of warehouse and distribution facilities totaling 70,000 sq. metres. Jim Barber, managing director, UPS UK & Ireland, said, "Preparing for the London 2012 Games is one of the most substantial and complex logistical projects in the world, so the next 1,000 days present a very exciting challenge for us.
