Export Boost for UK Firms as 'Olympics Effect' Draws Multinational Buyers

  • 70% of multinationals trading with the UK are more inclined to source British exports as a result of London 2012.

  • 'Olympics effect' could equate to £ 21bn in new export revenues from multinational buyers.

  • London 2012 an 'excellent showcase' of the UK's contribution to the world, say international business leaders.

  • More Northern and Scottish firms expect a London 2012-related export boost than companies in the host city.

LONDON, 15 November 2012 - New research by UPS and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) reveals that The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has given the UK a major reputation boost among multinational business leaders. It predicts this boost could drive up to £ 21 billion in additional demand for British goods and services over the next 5 years.

The joint study identifies an 'Olympics effect' among senior executives at multinational corporations (MNCs) across the globe, who believe London 2012 provided an excellent showcase for UK business, leading to an increased trend to source British exports as a result.

The research also shows that UK exporters expect an increase in international sales as a result of London 2012, whilst surprisingly, more companies in northern England and Scotland expect to benefit from this halo effect than those in the host city of London.

"The legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will run much deeper than simply sport as we witness a positive impact on the overseas reputation of UK commerce and industry," said Cindy Miller, managing director at UPS UK, Ireland & Nordics. "In a difficult global marketplace, a projected uplift in international sales would represent a welcome boost for UK exporters."

The study is based on opinion research among senior business leaders at 500 MNCs across the globe and is supported by economic modelling and further opinion research among 962 UK exporters.

Window to the world: London 2012 drives UK export demand among multinationals

Four-fifths (80%) of multinational companies included in the survey currently buy goods and services from UK businesses. Three-quarters (70%) of these report that London 2012 has made them more inclined to source UK exports.

This rises to 90% of European multinationals, and 80% of Asian firms included in the study.

UPS and Cebr mapped this inclination against forecasted UK export demand by these companies to isolate an 'Olympics effect' - the increase in demand attributable to London 2012.

If MNCs currently trading with UK businesses follow through with these intentions, the study forecasts that London 2012 will drive an increase in UK exports worth £ 15 billion between 2013 and 2017.

In addition, 10% of MNCs included in the study do not currently source goods or services from the UK, but report they are now more inclined to do so. If UK exporters are able to capitalise on this interest, this would unlock a further £ 6 billion in export revenues.

The study also reveals that the timing of this Olympics-driven demand differs around the world. The 'Olympics effect' is strongest in 2013 in Europe and the Americas, whilst 2017 is when London 2012-driven demand is expected to peak in Asia (see Chart 1 below for further details). [All Cebr report]

Hearts and minds: London 2012 boosts UK's export reputation

The UPS and Cebr research shows that London 2012 has had a clear positive impact on the international reputation of the UK as a place to do business.

More than four-fifths of international business leaders believe that London 2012 provided an excellent showcase for the UK's contribution to the world (83%), [IB4] and for its business capabilities (82%). [IB4] Indeed, more than three-quarters (78%) admit that it has changed their perception of the UK as a place to do business. [IB3]

Nearly three-quarters (72%) believe that London 2012 has improved the reputation of British businesses abroad, [IB4] and has boosted Britain's credibility as a supplier (72%). [IB4]

Halo effect: More northern and Scottish businesses expect export uplift than London firms, post-Games

UK exporters are equally upbeat about the potential effect of London 2012 on their international sales. More than two thirds (68%) expect the Games to have a positive impact on export opportunities for their company in the long term. [E24]

By tracking this sentiment nationally, the research maps the anticipated halo effect of London 2012 on firms' exports across mainland UK.

Around two-thirds of companies in London (65%) and southern England (68%) expect an increase in export opportunities as a result of London 2012.
Moving further away from London, this dips to just 38% of firms across the central band of the Midlands, East Anglia and Wales, but surprisingly jumps to 86% of companies in northern England and 78% of firms in Scotland. [E24]

Notes to editors:

The findings of this UPS and Cebr study are based on independent economic analysis of the export impacts to UK businesses of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In order to estimate the effects of the London Olympics on UK exports, an international business survey of senior managers from 500 multinational companies (MNCs), with a combined turnover of $2.6 trillion, was conducted (each with a local presence of at least 1000 staff). This survey was conducted following the London 2012 Olympic Games in August and September 2012.

MNCs were asked if they were more inclined to source goods and services from the UK since the Olympics, and what the nature of this increased demand would likely be over the next four years. From these survey findings, Cebr calculated the uplift in UK export demand on behalf of those MNCs who acknowledged an 'Olympics effect'. This increased demand was integrated with export projections derived from Cebr's in-house UK macroeconomic model, in order to forecast the increase in exports between 2013 and 2017 resulting from this 'Olympics effect'.

Additional independent opinion research was conducted among 962 UK product-based exporters across the UK in July 2012, immediately prior to the London 2012 Olympic Games. The sample for this study comprised:

  • Owners / Managing Directors at 400 small companies (10-49 employees).

  • Senior decision-makers at 358 medium-sized companies (50-249 employees).

  • Senior decision-makers at 204 large companies (250+ employees).

UPS Delivers For ParalympicsGB

UPS today revealed its plans for the delivery of London 2012 team kit to Paralympic athletes across the UK. In this momentous logistical operation, UPS will be warehousing, packing and delivering more than 27,000 items to over 300 Paralympic athletes.

The first step in the process will involve UPS warehousing all of the kit, so it can be quickly and easily picked and packed for each individual athlete, depending on their size and individual requirements. All items will then be scanned, in order to ensure maximum stock control, before being packed into kit bags ready for delivery.

"Over the next few weeks, UPS will be delivering over 27,000 items of kit to Paralympic athletes around the country" said Tim Hollingsworth CEO, British Paralympic Association "This is a mammoth job and it is vital that all the kit arrives on time and to the right place, so it is important to be working with a company like UPS that is well versed in this kind of large scale operation."

Cindy Miller, Managing Director UK, Ireland & Nordics, UPS added: "This is a hugely significant moment for any athlete on their journey to the London 2012 Games and we are excited to be playing such a vital role in making their dreams of representing their country at the Paralympic Games a reality."

Each athlete will receive three official kit bags containing their competition and Village wear designed by Stella McCartney for adidas. The cases will be transported to training HQ's for each Paralympic sport around the UK using innovative tracking and vehicle technology supporting UPS's broader commitment to sustainable logistics for the Games.

UPS is delivering the kit well in advance of the Paralympic Games so the athletes have time to wear them and ensure they are the correct size. A UPS Swap Van will be travelling around the country in the weeks following the main delivery carrying additional stock in order to cater to any last-minute exchanges.
As well as supporting the logistical needs of TeamGB and ParalympicsGB, UPS is also the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Over the course of the entire Games UPS will be responsible for the delivery of approximately 30 million items, including 1 million pieces of sporting equipment, in the most significant peacetime logistical undertaking in the world.

Thames Helps The Flow of UPS Logistics for London 2012

UPS today announces the use of two barges on a route along the Thames as an integral part of their logistics operations for the London 2012 Games. The barges follow a route down the river from the largest UPS London 2012 logistics facility, located at the Port of Tilbury, to Northumberland Wharf, situated just a couple of miles from the Olympic Village.

This demonstration event is being undertaken by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) in partnership with UPS and Transport for London. Pre-existing barge journeys have been utilized to transport thirty eight large containers full of furniture and soft furnishings, used to kit out the Olympic and Paralympic Village ahead of the athletes' arrival this summer.

In the future, if this initiative is upscaled, the use of barges can help to alleviate capacity on London's road networks, supporting LOCOG's broader sustainability efforts by reducing traffic congestion and noise pollution. Which is why it is hoped that this demonstration will inspire change in future use of the Thames.

A financial, social and environmental analysis of the barge transportation was undertaken to produce a reference document of key learnings to help the future transportation of goods on the Thames. This public documentation is the first of its kind and could potentially leave a lasting legacy by assisting businesses and organisations, to shift from road to water in logistical operations.

"Given its history as an essential trade route into London, it is fitting that The Thames will play such a crucial role in delivering the London 2012 Games", said Alan Williams, UPS director of London 2012 sponsorship and operations. "The river has been largely overlooked as a logistics supply chain route for many decades and even now barges are frequently travelling up or down it without any cargo. We hope today's launch will encourage other organisations to consider the benefits of reverse logistics and use the city's waterways once again."

Mick Wright, Head of Logistics London 2012 said "Previously, very little information existed on how to use the Thames to move containerized freight through London. The document we are producing will provide organisations and businesses with a valuable reference document on how to use the Thames for this purpose. This adds to LOCOG's wider sustainability aim and can help towards reducing carbon emissions in the future."

On Your Bike! UPS Extends London 2012 Alternative Delivery Fleet

UPS today announces the addition of bicycles to its alternative vehicles fleet in the UK. As the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this announcement marks a significant step in the company's commitment to delivering both sustainable logistics for London 2012 and innovative solutions to serve customers during the Games.

The bicycles will play a key role in delivering to postcodes impacted by temporary road changes and expected increased congestion at Games time. Bicycles will be able to access most near-side Games Lanes on the Olympic and Paralympic Route Networks.

This programme follows successful trials in the UK which began in early January and ran until the end of February 2012, serving multiple postcodes around central London. To continue UPS's Games legacy, as well as providing key operational support during London 2012, UPS will also continue to use the bicycles after the Games throughout the London area.

In addition to the bicycle programme, UPS is also employing other non-car delivery methods during the Games in the form of walkers, which reduces carbon emissions and urban noise. London's waterways come into play as well, with UPS transporting containers from a warehouse at the Port of Tilbury to a point close to the Olympic Park via barges on the River Thames, a reintroduction of a key delivery channel and options for other business.

"At UPS, we have always been committed to reducing the impact of our operations on the environment in innovative ways" said Cindy Miller, Managing Director, UPS UK, Ireland & Nordics said: "Bicycles were actually a foundation to our business over 100 years ago; when a few messenger boys began the business which became UPS today. It's extremely exciting for us to go back to our roots with the announcement of our bike programme today which will play such a crucial role in helping us deliver the most sustainable Games possible."

Alternative modes of transport is just one part of several new technologies, protocols and procedures that UPS is introducing to the United Kingdom as part of its London 2012 sustainability strategy. To ensure UPS can go the extra mile and deliver a sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is rolling out:

  • The introduction of 10 dual-fuel biomethane-diesel vehicles and electric vehicles to its dedicated London 2012 fleet

  • Telematics technology to help optimise routes and efficiency, slash energy consumption and improve customer service and driver safety

  • A commitment to being carbon neutral in UPS operations, achieved through rigorous measurement and management of any carbon emissions associated with delivering London 2012, and then mitigation of any carbon emissions that cannot be managed out

  • Other initiatives such as responsible waste management, participation in employee fitness programmes and 'green' volunteer initiatives

How Am I Driving?

Today, UPS announces the introduction of telematics technology to their UK fleet for the very first time. This innovative technology will help to optimise city delivery routes and from its inception, increase efficiency during London 2012. It marks a further step in UPS's ongoing commitment to helping LOCOG deliver the most sustainable logistics possible for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The telematics system functions by using sensors to capture information about a delivery vehicle, its route, and driver behavior such as speed, engine use and idle time; which affect efficiency in the delivery process. This data is then fed back and analysed in order to implement improvements that will help to slash energy consumption and positively impact air quality, improve customer service, and make its drivers safer on the road. London 2012 has acted as a welcome catalyst in the implementation of this technology, which will be used across the whole of the UK after the closing ceremony.

"Each of our vehicles has been fitted with telematics sensors that help us to draw a detailed picture of the driver's - and the truck's - day. This technology will continuously be capturing data on more than 200 vehicle related elements, effectively turning them into 'rolling laboratories,'" said Cindy Miller, managing Director, UPS UK, Ireland & Nordics.

She continued, "We are thrilled to be introducing this technology across our UK fleet. Alongside other London 2012 sustainability efforts, telematics will play a major role in ensuring we deliver the most sustainable logistics possible for a Games and also leave a lasting legacy in for UK operations once the Games conclude."

Telematics and other technologies are only one part of several new protocols and procedures that UPS is introducing to the United Kingdom as part of its London 2012 sustainability strategy. To ensure UPS can go the extra mile and deliver a sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is rolling out:

  • The introduction of 10 dual-fuel biomethane-diesel vehicles and electric vehicles to its dedicated London 2012 fleet

  • Alternative modes transport for deliveries, including a bicycle programme and on-foot deliveries as well as use of the River Thames for transporting items to the Olympic and Paralympic Village

  • A commitment to being carbon neutral in UPS operations, achieved through rigorous measurement and management of any carbon emissions associated with delivering London 2012, and then mitigation of any carbon emissions that cannot be managed out
